IGREJA SANTA RITA
Jesuit-style church with Baroque-Rococo altar, city museum of sacred art and adjoining cemetery
Built in 1722 by freed slaves, Santa Rita Church features Jesuit-style architecture. The interior is decorated in a Baroque-Rococo style, particularly the altar. It's the oldest church in the village and the "postcard" of Paraty that you see when you arrive by boat. Today, it houses the town's fine museum of sacred art. Note the finely sculpted balcony balustrade and the adjoining cemetery, built in the 19th century. Not to be missed: the Santa Rita festas processions in mid-July.
