STRONG PERPETUAL DEFENSOR
Military fort in Paraty, with a beautiful view over the bay, now home to a small anecdotal museum
Paraty's strategic location and function as a port on the ancient gold route that ran from Vila Rica, now Ouro Preto, to the Fluminense coast, led the Portuguese to fortify the site with a military fort, the Forte Defensor Perpétuo. On the other side of the river, following the Praia do Pontal road, a pleasant stroll through the forest leads to this fort, built in 1703 to protect Paraty from invasion. Today, it houses a small museum. The view of the bay alone is well worth the trip.
