Passagem often reconciles tourists with the aesthetics of the city. This is Cabo Frio's small, historic, colonial district. A former Tupinamba village, Cabo Frio was founded in 1541, a few decades after the discovery of Brazil. Passagem is considered the cradle of the seaside resort. Here you can see small, low, colorful houses and streets with cobblestones polished by time. The charming São Benedito church dominates the main square. A stroll along the canal-side street is a welcome respite from the rolling waves.
