The Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara is in European neo-Gothic style, with curious red tiles that make it like no other. It contains the royal chapel, which houses the tombs of Dom Pedro II, the last emperor of Brazil, and his wife, Empress Dona Teresa Cristina. The via crucis is French, as is the image of Saint Peter of Alcântara, carved from Carrara marble. In the evening, the cathedral is decked out in colorful illumination.
