A vast Art Nouveau-style iron greenhouse in Petrópolis, now the venue for various exhibitions
In the image of the English and French "Cristal Palace", which paid tribute to the "miracles" of nascent industrialization, the Palácio de Cristal is a vast iron greenhouse in the Art Nouveau style. It was built entirely in France, dismantled by ship and reassembled on site in Petrópolis. This beautiful structure was inaugurated in 1884 by Princess Isabelle - who held a grand reception here in 1888 to celebrate the abolition of slavery, a year before the fall of the Empire. Today, the palace is used for exhibitions.
