PALÁCIO DA LIBERDADE
European-style governor's palace with an interior design combining French imperial and Art Nouveau styles.
Inaugurated in 1897 as the palace of the Governor of the State of Minas Gerais, it reflects the influence of the European style of the young capital, mixing neoclassicism and eclecticism. The interior decoration combines French imperial and art nouveau styles. The salons, the massive chandeliers and the allegorical murals are impressive. The Louis XV style banqueting room, the mural by Antônio Parreira and the gardens by Paul Villon are particularly impressive. The metal structures were imported from Belgium, as were the magnificent staircase and the furniture.
