Along with the São Francisco church, it's the city's other must-see. The Basilica Nossa Senhora do Pilar is the magnificent church in the Pilar district of Ouro Preto's lower town. It was built between 1711 and 1733. In addition to the 400 kilograms of gold making up its central altar, the wealth of ornaments, gilding and woodwork make the Basilica do Pilar a magnificent masterpiece of Brazilian Baroque. Museum of Sacred Art in the basement.
