IGREJA MATRIZ DE SANTA EFIGÊNIA
Church built with gold extracted from the Chico Rei mine, featuring a sculpted altar and a statue of a black pope.
The church was built in 1733 by and for slaves, using gold extracted from the mine of Chico Rei, the enslaved Congolese king who bought his freedom. The altar was sculpted by Aleijadinho's master Francisco Xavier de Brito. Inside is a statue of a black pope and details of shell designs. According to legend, slaves hid gold in their hair before washing in this church to finance the emancipation of slaves.
