MUNICIPAL TEATRO
This former working theater was an important part of daily life at the time.
The Opera de Vila Rica, now the Teatro Municipal de Ouro Preto, is the oldest active theater on the American continent. It was built in 1769 by João de Souza Lisboa and inaugurated on June 6, 1770. Emperors Dom Pedro I and II had a box opposite the stage.
The theater was an integral part of daily life at the time. Every celebration was a great spectacle, and the theater was the most appropriate means of expressing the pomp and opulence of the powerful 18th-century nobility. Frequent shows.
