Baroque church featuring a wood-carved altar with a large, elaborately executed statue of St. Peter.
This baroque church dominates the city from the top of the São Pedro hill. It was designed by Antônio Pereira de Sousa Calheiros, who was also responsible for the Nossa Senhora do Rosário church in Ouro Preto. It is one of the three Baroque churches in Minas with a rounded plan, a revolutionary feature for the time. The altar shows elaborate woodcarving work, and it houses a large and elaborately executed statue of St. Peter.
