CATEDRAL BASILICA DA SÉ
Church in the purest Mineiro Baroque style, with a modest, sober architectural design, seen from the outside.
Built in the first half of the 18th century and inaugurated in 1760, it is the city's oldest church. Its interior is richly decorated by Aleijadinho and Manuel da Costa Ataide, in the purest Mineiro Baroque style. Better known as the Cathedral of Mariana, its main wealth lies in its interior decoration, which boasts one of the most sophisticated collections of sculptures from the colonial era, carved from wood using instruments such as the chisel.
Seen from the outside, the Sé has a modest, sober architectural design, reminiscent of some Jesuit buildings on the Brazilian coast, more austere than in colonial times. Above the entrance portal, two windows with balconies and parapets appear, and just above them, the two bell towers.
The superb architectural decoration of the main chapel highlights the high level of refinement achieved by Minas Gerais architects in the mid-18th century. A particular attraction is the German Arp Schnitger organ, built in 1701 and installed in 1753. The main altar features a canvas depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The side altars in the nave, with the exception of the Santa Barbara altar, are in the same style as the main altar, with decorative details such as the Atlantis (man-figure statue). These altars are dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, St. Peter, St. Francis, Lord of the Steps, and to Saints Barbara, Luzia and Antonio.
