IGREJA SÃO FRANCISCO DE ASSIS
Church topped by a curved lintel, featuring two stone towers and a large carved door with stone trim.
It was built between 1764 and 1793. Manuel Ataíde, the city's most famous painter, is buried here. It features two paintings by the Mestre, including one with a surprising trompe-l'oeil illusion. At the end of 1763, the foundation stone was laid. In 1777, the main chapel, sacristy and novitiate house were completed. The first mass was celebrated on December 6. In 1783, it was decided to build a new frontispiece and towers, and to modify the choir arch.
Located in the same square as the Carmo church, the building is in stone, with two stone towers flanking the curvilinear pediment, topped by a patriarchal cross. It has a large carved door with stone trim, topped by a curved lintel that ends in a large tablet flanked by angels, containing a dedication to St. Francis of Assisi, dated 1763.
Inside, the church is well proportioned. The altarpiece is composed of two central columns, with a fluted shaft and torsos at the bottom. Flanking the altarpiece, two pilasters on either side support the arches of the choir ceiling. The throne is high, housing the image of Christ crucified in the upper part and St. Francis of Assisi in the steps. Notable artists, such as Manuel da Costa Ataíde, carried out work between 1794 and 1795, including the gilding of the altarpiece of the main altar and the altar of Santa Izabel, as well as the incarnation of the image.
