IGREJA SÃO FRANCISCO DE ASSIS
Church topped by a curved lintel, featuring two stone towers and a large carved door with stone trim.
Built between 1764 and 1793. Manuel da Costa Ataide, a famous painter of the city, is buried here. There are two paintings by the Mestre, one of which has a surprising trompe-l'oeil effect. At the end of 1763, the first stone was laid. In 1777, the main chapel, the sacristy and the novitiate house were completed. The first mass was celebrated on December 6. In 1783, it was decided to make a new frontispiece and new towers, as well as to modify the choir arch.
Located in the same square as the Carmo church, the building is made of stone, with two stone towers flanking the curvilinear pediment, topped by a patriarchal cross. It has a large carved door, with stone fittings, topped by a curved lintel that ends with a large tablet flanked by angels, containing a dedication to St. Francis of Assisi, dated 1763.
Inside, the church is well proportioned. The altarpiece is composed of two central columns, with a fluted shaft and torsos at the bottom. Bordering the altarpiece, two pilasters on each side support the arches of the choir ceiling. The throne is high, housing in the upper part the image of the crucified Christ and in the steps, St. Francis of Assisi. Notable artists, such as Manuel da Costa Athaíde, carried out works between 1794 and 1795, we find the gilding of the altarpiece of the main altar and the altar of Santa Izabel, as well as the incarnation of the image.
