CASA DA CÂMARA E CADEIA
A town hall for political and administrative purposes, with a lower part consisting of a prison for slaves.
Although Mariana is less famous than Ouro Preto for discovering the baroque art of the Mineiro, it is nevertheless a city with a rich heritage. The casa da camara (town hall) is a superb building for political and administrative purposes. The lower part was a cadeia (prison) for slaves. The famous soapstone contributes to the beauty of the building. This building is part of a rich and aesthetic architectural complex, where two baroque churches face a place of temporal power and one of the few pillories in the country.
