PELOURINHO
This symbolic old pillory is one of only three remaining in Brazil, along with those in Salvador de Bahia and São Luís do Maranhão.
The history of colonial Brazil is inextricably linked to the slave trade, an imprescriptible crime against humanity. It was the blood of men torn from Africa that made the country's fortune. This former pillory, where recalcitrant or maroon slaves were tied up and tortured, is one of three remaining in Brazil, along with Salvador de Bahia and São Luís do Maranhão. Symbolically, it stands in front of the town hall-prison, an expression of the power of the Portuguese masters. Like the sculptures of the region, this pillory is made of soapstone.
