At the entrance to the grotto is a rock church that attracts large numbers of worshippers and pilgrims who pray on its forecourt.

A veritable local Lourdes, the grotto of Nossa Senhora da Lapa is the object of an ancient cult. The cave, a former Maroon slave hideout where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, is visited by thousands of people on August1. The church is built at the entrance to the grotto, and large numbers of the faithful and pilgrims pray in front of the cave church. The surrounding area is invaded by stalls of street vendors. The village we pass through is also an ancient quilombo.
