CASA DE CHICA DA SILVA
Residence between 1755 and 1770, home to the exuberant Chica da Silva and her partner, diamond merchant João Fernandes de Oliveira.
Between 1755 and 1770, this house-museum was the home of the exuberant Chica da Silva and her partner, the diamond merchant João Fernandes de Oliveira, with whom she had a trio of 13 children. A mulatto, a freed slave, Chica broke free from the conventions of the time by marrying into one of the city's wealthiest families and frequenting the same venues as her partner, much to the chagrin of the ultraconservative white elite. Chica da Silva was immortalized in Carlos Diegues' film of the same name. The museum is no match for the mineira heroine.
