Taking the Maria Fumaça between Tiradentes and Sao Joao Del Rei is a superb opportunity to ride a vintage train through the Serra São José. The station's railway museum brings to life the history of trains around the world. Minas is intimately linked with this means of locomotion. The first Baldwin locomotive, used on the first Estrada de Ferro Oeste e Minas journey in August 1881, is on display. On the way to São João del Rei, it's a good idea to sit on the right-hand side of the train, for the best view of the Serra!
