IGREJA NOSSA SENHORA DO ROSÁRIO DOS PRETOS
The town's oldest church, with numerous paintings and images of black saints on the altars.
This is the city's oldest church, built in 1708 by and for slaves like all the churches of this order. Under its stone vaults, it features paintings and images of black saints on the altars. Elements of the Catholic religion are mixed with those of African religions, notably Candomblé, an expression of the syncretism of the parishioners. One painted black saint, Santo Elesbão, is a black Christian king who lived in Ethiopia in the sixth century.
