The most anticipated religious event in Salvador. Syncretism between the animist rites of the origins and the catholic processions, the Bahian women will wash the steps of the church of Bonfim. This festival honored the cult of Oxalà. Slaves traditionally washed the churches. Following the wish of a soldier returning from the war in Paraguay, the freed slaves pretended to follow this ex-voto and thus "made official" this animist rite, inscribing it in the tradition of the Portuguese Catholic masters. Hundreds of thousands of people take part in it.
