Carmelite church in neoclassical style, featuring a large solid silver altar and rococo-style sacristy
The church of the Carmelites (Carmes chaussées), in the district to which it gave its name, is part of a complex erected by the Carmelite order. Completed around 1700, it is built in a neo-classical style. It has a large solid silver altar. The sacristy, in rococo style, is one of the most beautiful in Brazil. The headquarters of the Portuguese forces, it was here that the treaty of expulsion of the Dutch was signed in 1625. Currently, the convent annexed to the church is managed by the Pestana group and has become a large luxury hotel.
