MUNICIPAL CAMARA
Salvador City Council with its original façade, one of the country's most important examples of colonial civil architecture
Formerly the seat of the city's mayor, the Câmara Municipal is now the City Council of Salvador. Throughout Brazil, and since the colonial period, the "camaras municipais" have always played an important role. They were in charge of sanitation, public health and land use regulation. The one in Salvador dates from the middle of the 17th century. It still has its original façade. It is one of the most important buildings of colonial civil architecture in the country. The building also housed a prison in the 18th century.
