FORT DE SANTA MARIA
Remodelled fort inspired by Italian architecture, part of Brazil's national historic and artistic heritage
This fort built in the 17th century (the works started in 1614, directed by the engineer in charge of the fortifications of Brazil Francisco de Frias da Mesquita), was a high place of resistance to the Dutch invasions. After the Portuguese reconquest, the Forte de Santa Maria was rebuilt and expanded between 1625 and 1627. However, its current structure is due to the engineer José Pais Esteves, who in 1696 remodeled the building based on Italian architecture. Since 1938, the fort is part of the Brazilian national historical and artistic heritage.
