PRAÇA DA PIEDADE
Praça da Piedade, north of the Barris district, home to the Church of Nossa Senhora, built by the French Capuchin friars
To the north of the Barris district, to the south of the Pelourinho, Praça da Piedade was in colonial times located along the fortifications of the city center, where there was a gateway. It was the scene of many significant events, including the execution in November 1799 of Luís Gonzaga das Virgens, author of pamphlets advocating Bahia's independence and the abolition of slavery. In the 1980s, it was restored by the public authorities. The church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, built in 1686 by the French Capuchin friars, is particularly noteworthy.
