ORIXÁS
A fine collection of 12 sculptures of orixás, deities from Afro-Brazilian cults, on the grounds surrounding the ECT building
The grounds around the ECT (post office) building are home to the finest collection oforixás sculptures by sculptor Mario Cravo Júnior. The orixás are deities from Afro-Brazilian cults. At the heart of Brazilian religious syncretism, and principally in Bahia, each of the orixás, derived from the Yoruba religious cults of Nigeria, Benin and Togo, has its own attributes, colors and clothing. Today, 12 of the original 16 orixás remain. Yémanjà is the mother of the orixás.
