Imposing Baroque monument ideal for admiring various portraits, now the town hall of Cachoeira
As in other Brazilian cities, this imposing monument was first a prison before becoming the seat of government of the State of Bahia (of which Cachoeira was once the capital). It was in this House of the House and public prison of Cachoeira that Dom Pedro I was acclaimed Regent and Defender of Brazil, in 1822. It is a baroque building where you can admire the Portrait of Dom Pedro II, by José Couto and The first step towards the independence of Bahia, by Antônio Parreiras. Today it is the city hall.
