CASTELO DO GARCIA D'AVILA
Ruined building on a magnificent stretch of beach, symbolizing the early days of Portugal's conquest of Brazil
This ruined building from 1552 symbolizes the early days of the Portuguese conquest of Brazil. There was no nobleman or aristocrat to embark on a risky and unprofitable adventure. The candidates for departure were therefore recruited from among the small nobility of Lisbon, granting them immense territories. García d'Avila, an obscure rancher, found himself at the head of a "captaincy". He chose this magnificent stretch of beach to build a residence worthy of his status.
