IGREJA MATRIZ DE SÃO JORGE DOS ILHEUS
Old church with a fine example of early colonial architecture, housing the Museu de Arte Sacra with antique furniture
Inaugurated in 1556, it is the oldest church in the city. It was built in honor of St. George, the patron saint of the city during the era of hereditary captaincies. This building is often present and evoked in the works of Jorge Amado. It is a beautiful example of "primitive" colonial architecture and one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Ilheus. It houses the Museu de Arte Sacra. There are some beautiful pieces of antique furniture.
