IGREJA DA MISERICORDIA
Church with a museum of sacred art, preserving the columns of the altars and housing 3 altarpieces transformed in the Rococo style
The Church of Mercy was the first church built in Brazil, in 1526. Rebuilt from 1776 on the site of the first chapel, the current Church of Mercy houses the Museum of Sacred Art. The pediment has volutes and a central medallion in baroque style. The interior of the church is simple, just like its exterior. The pulpit belonged to the old church, but only some of the frontispieces and altar columns have been preserved. The three altarpieces have been transformed in the Rococo style.
