The festival honoring saints Cosme and Damião is a fervently celebrated event in the small seaside town of Arraiail d'Ajuda.
There are many traditional religious festivals in Brazil. That of Cosme and Damião is fervently celebrated in Arraial d'Ajuda every 27 September. These two holy children, very popular in Brazil, are the object of a particular cult in Arraial. The festival is a family affair, with the preparation of the traditional caruru (a dish made from shrimp and quiabo, a green vegetable related to the bean) which must first be served successively to seven children before adults are allowed to touch it. It is a festival associated with religious syncretism.
