The cradle of the city, built in 1816, the fortress Nossa Senhora da Assunção marked the beginning of the history of the capital of Ceará.
The first fort built on the site was by the Dutch in 1649. In 1654, after the expulsion of the Dutch from Brazil, the Portuguese took possession of it again. The fortress then underwent modifications until the 19th century, additions and repairs, receiving the name Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
