It is also known as Praça do Relógio. In the heart of the city centre, it is the meeting place for pensioners. It was named after the Baron of Rio Branco, José Maria Paranhos Júnior, a nobleman of the imperial house and advisor to the emperor. The square was previously known as Comércio Square and Uruguaiana Square. It is the oldest square in the capital, where political meetings were held, due to the location of the Bar Carvalho and the Café Avenida, which have already disappeared. The square is a public garden of 4,410m².
