It was built by the Jesuits in 1629, who used indigenous labour. In the course of its history, the Igreja da Sé has undergone multiple renovations: restoration of the frontispiece in 1701, installation of a new clock in 1737, enlargement of the choir by Cabido in 1768, restoration of the floor between 1851 and 1927. Finally, between 1993 and 1996, the gold lining the walls of the interior of the church was brought to light again. Its neoclassical façade has been restored.
