IGREJA NOSSA SENHORA DO CARMO
Baroque church with convent serving as a refuge for the poor and homeless
This baroque church, built in 1624, played a decisive role in the expulsion of the Dutch in the 17th century. The monks urged the inhabitants of São Luis to resist the invaders, going so far as to offer the church and the convent as a refuge for the poor and homeless. With the proclamation of the Republic, the places of worship were gradually deserted, and the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo passed from the hands of the Carmelites to the Capuchins.
