Inaugurated on July 28, 1973, during the celebration of the Independence of Maranhão in Brazil, this museum gathers numerous objects related to the history of Maranhão. It contains furniture from the first half of the 19th century, old objects of daily life, paintings, sculptures, engravings, pieces of Catholic sacred art and also of African origin, as well as an impressive documentary collection on the life of the inhabitants of the capital in the 19th century.
