Located in the Praia Grande district, the Museu cafua das Merces is a cultural space dedicated to preserving the memory of African culture in Maranhão. Housed in a former slave market, the museum commemorates slavery and African culture in Brazil (and more specifically in the state of Maranhão), while contributing to the promotion of African cultural diversity. On display are testimonies to the lives of slaves during the colonial era, as well as drums and photographs related to the Maranhão religion, Tambor de Mina.
