PELOURINHO Y RUÍNAS DA IGREJA DE SÃO MATIAS
Colonial vestige reconstituted near the ruins of theIgreja São Matias
The Praça da Matriz in Alcântara houses the last of the pillories where slaves were once tortured. When slavery was abolished in Brazil, all of these installations were destroyed, but this one has survived to the present day. The three parts of the pelourinho were buried by three freed slaves. One of them would have revealed the location. This reconstructed vestige of the colonial era is close to the ruins of the Igreja São Matias, built in the 17th century.
