The ruins of an ancient church embody the history of Portuguese colonial expansion and the abandonment of Vila Bla to its slaves
You can't venture to Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade without taking a look at the ruins of its old colonial church built in 1793, although the site lost some of its charm in 2006 when a roof was put on to protect it from the weather. With its remarkably thick adobe walls (over a metre thick), it was probably never fully completed. It embodies the history of Portuguese colonial expansion and the abandonment of Vila Bla to its slaves, the first capital of Mato Grosso, which was forgotten in favour of Cuiabá in 1820.
