An imposing, angular fort on the banks of the Rio Paraguay, now a base for the Brazilian navy
It's a big, imposing, angular building, made of ashlar with black loopholes, on the banks of the Rio Paraguay. An isolated fort, lost on the border of Paraguay, with an eventful past. Built in the 18th century, it was the scene of bloody confrontations during the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), during which Baron Leverger, a good-natured Breton, courageously distinguished himself. Today, the fort, still in activity, is a base of the Brazilian National Navy. It can be reached after a 7-hour boat ride from Corumbá.
