NAZARÉ BASÍLICA
Basilica with marble altar, granite columns, French stained glass and mosaic medallions
Built in 1909, this basilica, which bears a striking resemblance to St. Peter's in Rome, was inaugurated in 1923. The doors of the basilica are in bronze, the altar in marble. The interior features granite columns, stained glass windows made in France and mosaic medallions.
Círio de Nazaré. This is also the center of the great October pilgrimage, the Cirio de Nazaré. Every year, on the second Sunday in October, the image of the Virgin of Nazareth leaves Belém Cathedral for the Basilica, followed by two million people.
