STRONG DO PRESEPIO
Fort do Presépio, designed to protect and monitor Guaraja Bay, became the headquarters of the Belém military circle
Fort do Presépio marked the founding of the town in 1616. As in many places on the outskirts of the Portuguese empire, this military edifice was designed to protect and watch over Guaraja Bay. Today, it is the headquarters of the Belém military circle. The museum tells the story of the city's foundation and the Portuguese colonization of the Amazon in the 17th century. There's not much to see here, apart from a few modest cannons; however, you can enjoy a drink while daydreaming beside the river, as there's a restaurant here.
