ARARIBÁ
Opened in 1999, this vast boutique, which looks like a museum of Amazonian craftsmanship, is a reference in terms of what the indigenous peoples of northern Brazil produce: the works of about 80 peoples and tribes are presented and offered for sale. Araribá is committed to the economic development of the region by promoting the craftsmanship of its inhabitants, and in fact, there is really everything from jewellery to everyday utensils, as well as impressive decorative objects: masks, sculptures, clothing, various accessories, musical instruments, bows, spears and arrows... All this is completed by a fine selection of books and CDs. A must-see stop in Alter, both to learn more about the many cultures that make up the Brazilian Amazon and to stock up on gifts. Prices are non-negotiable and sometimes high, however.
