PREDIO DA ALFÂNDEGA
Eclectic-style building on the banks of the river, built by the English using materials imported from Liverpool
When you arrive in Manaus by river, there's one building that inevitably catches your eye: the Customs House or Prédio da Alfândega. This eclectic building, with Moorish and medieval Renaissance elements, was built by the English using materials imported from Liverpool. The exposed, pre-assembled brick blocks were transported in the holds of ships to Manaus. It was inaugurated in Manaus in 1906 by the then president of the republic, Afonso Penna.
