Impressive fort near the Rio Guaporé, built to ensure Lusitanian control over this originally Spanish territory
The Fort Principe da Beira is an impressive fort lost on the Bolivian border, near the Rio Guaporé, in the middle of seriously cleared jungle. It was built between 1776 and 1783 to ensure Lusitanian control over this originally Spanish territory, west of the demarcation line of the Treaty of Tordesillas. History buffs will marvel at its cannons and ramparts, whose perimeter makes it one of the country's largest strongholds. It can be reached by boat from Guajarà-Mirim (3 days) or by bus via Ji-Parana.
