It was built by the Franciscans in the th century instead of a church which replaced itself a former chapel dating from the beginning of the th century and whose location was chosen for its proximity with gang where many Christian slaves, to the north of the square, were imprisoned. The Franciscan Church was attached to a small convent. It was in 1630 that two first Franciscan preachers from Lombardy arrived in Tripoli. They had previously received the Ottomans'permission to stay in the city, in order to assist Christians enslaved by the Tripoli privateers. Between the th and the early th century, only a few chaplains from European consulates had been allowed in the city. In a few decades, the Franciscan mission grew in size and was high in 1641 at the rank of Apostologique Prefecture. Nevertheless, missionaries'reports with Tripoli pashas, sometimes old privateers, were fluctuating, and the most daring were sometimes imprisoned with their flock.
The Franciscans remained in Tripoli after the end of piracy, as evidenced by their reconstruction of the church Sainte-Marie-des-Anges. Rebuilt in 1897, it will remain a cathedral until 1928. After his renovation in the early 2000 s, she served as a contemporary painting exhibition room. Since 2007, it has returned to a place of worship. It is now a church for the Anglican community, which has many faithful among the African populations in Tripoli.
