According to the stories, the En mosque (meaning «the Camel Mosque) is the oldest in Tripoli, dating back to the era of fatimides sovereigns. It would appear that the fatimide mosque, probably the largest in the country, was destroyed in 1510 by Spanish conquerors during their assaults on the inhabitants who had fled to its walls. It was then abandoned for a century and was rebuilt in 1610. It was the first very large mosque to domes (42 in all) built in Libya. Its long arcades supported by a profusion of short columns with capitals (36 in every 6 rows) all different, in a prayer room of a modest size, contribute to the charm of this building that is both sober and welcoming. His small square minaret is of Maghreb and non-Ottoman inspiration.
