THE ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUM

It's a pretty, dusty museum, occupying the ancient Ottoman fort.

A sign in English in the museum recalls a dark page in the city's military history, when in 1943, an American-French air raid, precisely aimed at the fort where the Italian garrison was located, damaged the city killing many civilians and destroying many houses. It is composed of four wings where the objects of the daily lives of the inhabitants of the old Ghadamès, pottery, famous crafts footwear such as they are made at the Ben Yedder shop, traditional medicine, crafts woven in alfa, old gardening tools, traditional clothes etc. A second wing room exposes the ancient capitals and friezes that the city was the ancient Cydamus. In the old town, ancient columns have sometimes been incorporated into the walls of some crossings and mosques. In the fourth room, one will find the detailed plan of the old town, and a new circular room, in particular, houses old documents relating to the accounts of the water shares of the Ain el-Faras source and others relating to commercial transactions at the time of the city of large chamelières chamelières caravanes. Beautiful black and white photographs evoke the time when the old town was inhabited. A room is reserved for the Tuareg objects because these nomads have always lived in Ghadamès, where they trade and train the caravans.
