Although it belongs to the Gandan monastery, the Gesar temple is not located within its enclosure, but at least 250 meters from its first gate. It was erected as a tribute to the Tibetan king Gesar. This hero, who has inspired many poets, is the subject of an epic tale in verse and prose composed over eight centuries ago and called The Epic of King Gesar. The monks inside the temple are very friendly to foreigners. Not much else to report except that the architecture is Chinese-inspired.
