EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF CHINGGIS KHAAN
This gigantic stainless steel equestrian statue of Chinggis Khaan stands on the spot where the legendary Mongol emperor is said to have discovered a golden whip (which explains why the rider carries it in one hand). At 40 metres high, it is the world's largest equestrian statue, standing on a 10-metre-high circular base supported by 36 columns symbolizing the 36 kings who succeeded Chinggis Khaan, up to and including Ligden Khaan. It symbolically faces east, towards the province of Khentiy, his homeland. It is the most visited place in Mongolia, and Mongolians visit it regularly to honor the man who, after 1992, once again became the hero of an entire people. There's a certain kitschiness to it, but it's impressive: such an imposing structure in a vast steppe that's just as imposing, it's a sight to behold. In the basement of the imposing statue, a small museum displays artefacts from the history of Mongolia and its warriors, as well as a ger supposedly representing what a Mongol emperor's home was like in Chinggis' time. There's also a short film on the history and construction of the complex. The highlight of the visit, however, is the climb inside the statue, and the terrace installed on the horse's mane, just below the menacing gaze of the world's greatest conqueror. The view from up there is quite impressive, taking in the entire surrounding steppe. Not to be missed, if only to witness the excitement of the Mongols, who have turned it into a veritable place of pilgrimage.
Inside the statue's circular base, a restaurant and cafe allow you to eat and drink while admiring the surrounding steppe from one of the picture windows. The complex also features souvenir stores and traditional clothing rental. In the entrance hall stands the world's largest boot, 9 meters high. This traditional Mongolian shoe weighs over two tons. It was built in 2007 and was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records. From the second floor, you'll see numerous offerings, in the form of banknotes, thrown inside.
Around the statue, a tourist complex is under construction: in addition to the other statues representing Chinggis' faithful generals, over 200 yurts are planned, as well as a ski slope, a visitors' center, etc.
