NATURAL PARK URAN TOGOO UUL
It is a reserve that houses several extinct volcanoes. The one of Uran Uul, in activity 20 to 25 million years ago, rises to 1,686 meters above sea level. It is surmounted by a crater of 500 meters in diameter and 50 meters deep, at the bottom of which is nestled a small lake of 20 meters in diameter, surrounded by thick forests. The place is magnificent. In spite of the small size of the reserve, it shelters a rather varied fauna, since one finds there argalis, ibex of Siberia as well as many migratory ducks. The flora is not in rest, the lava dating from several million years having left a particularly fertile environment. The area has been protected since 1965 by the Great Khoural, and was extended in 1995 to include also the south of the volcano, on more than 5 800 hectares. It is located halfway between Ulaanbaatar and Lake Khovsgol, and its relatively easy access makes it a pleasant stop on the long road between the capital and the "blue pearl of Mongolia".
Another volcano in the area, Togoo Uul, rises a little higher, at 1920 meters above sea level. It is also easily tamed by walkers, even beginners, who wish to reach its crater. There is also Javalch Uul, a third volcano included in the protected area, whose name refers to a small pot.
The park will seduce hikers for its flourishing nature, almost virgin, its fauna and flora.
