West of Mörön, in the sum (or department) of Tsagaan Uul, live about 7,000 people of the Khotgoid ethnic group, the largest subgroup of the Khalkha Mongols. They are settled mainly in the northwestern part of the country since the 16th century. On the outskirts of the Avdrant mountain and the Tes river, natural wonders of the district which form a beautiful valley, one can see ancient monuments covered with Turkish inscriptions. The latter can be dated to the end of the 8th century and the beginning of the 9th century.
